Oriel Park at Dundalk
was a madhouse, after seeing its prodigal sons taking over the cup from last
edition champions the Shamrock Rovers.
Dundalk is playing
a one possessed football in this edition of the SSE- Airtricity League, with a
Cork City closing in; still the Oriel Park lad’s aren’t giving up so easily.
A double was the meaning
of this match, getting even on their elimination from semifinals of the FAI
Ford Cup and on top of that dethroned the 2013 champions.
What a show indeed,
was the one put by the local Lilywhites on a sold out afternoon of football on
a thrilling match being displayed.
As many know the Corn Sraithe na hÉireann or the League of Ireland, established on
1973 and being an open tournament to the squads of the League of Ireland and at
times lower level teams being invited.
So far this event has seen the likes of the Dundalk
Bhoys win it a total of four times, before this match and crowning and all around
effort from the local squad for the fifth cup.
Coming to this
match, the Lilywhites had a streak of 12 years without winning any shield and
this EA Sports accomplishment broke that spell.
It’s not easy
juggling League play and internal competitions, but for Manager Stephen Kenny
his one of kind strategies is playing an important role in the overall success
of his club.
Still we have a
tight race in the Airtricity league and this piece of silverware is an uplifting
experiences as well an injection of optimism for this club fighting its way to
glory!
For now we hail the
Dundalk squad achievement and with the league shield if they hold on, this will
make a double of a perfect campaign that saw this squad determination.
Indeed, this squad
played with an all-around ambition, won what many dubbed a page- turner of a match
that was decided by a double from Dundalk Midfielder Dane Massey and go ahead
goal from Patrick Hoban.
I do credit the Lilywhites
backfield defiance and brave efforts of defending its goalkeeper Gabriel Sava
post and holding strongly in what many saw a furious reaction from the visiting
Hoops and saving the day.
A well-deserved
shield for the Dundalk squad was a prize for their overall efforts and now
going into their next compromise in the Airticity League and seeking the coveted
Shield as champions of this edition.
