Dundalk winning the league title highlights the league of Ireland recap


With a late goal by the league golden boot winner Patrick Hoban, Dundalk rescue a point at home and atop they proclaimed themselves this 2018 edition of the League of Ireland champions to a frantic Oriel Park.

In addition of seeing the salvation of a go getter in yet another fighting campaign for the Bit O’ Red Sligo Rovers and the sad ending to the Boys of the coast in Wicklow County, seeing how its Bray Wanderers going down in relegation. 

Still the league being in its ending stages, we have another contest between the Shamrock Rovers and Waterford for the race for third place finish and looking forward to seize the last European spot in the League of Ireland.  

In Markets Field at Limerick, the Super Blues played host to the Candystripes of Derry City coming to town and looking at any cost to stop their odd streak of four games in the negative.

In spite of winning the EA Sports Cup shield over first division Cobh Ramblers, for manager Kenny Shiels it was business as usual, after a first half goal by Derry City Ronan Hale in the 24’ minute, sealing the win.

Back in Tallaght Stadium, the local Shamrock Rovers got the visit of the defending champions Cork City in what became a defensive match ending in an even stalemate between both the Hoops and the Rebel Army. 

Despite the local Hoops, leading the way offensively in the course of the match with nineteen shoots, overall, in the end for John Caulfield Rebel Army defensive stance these had to concede the league title after their draw in Dublin.

In Phibsborough the local Bohemians playing against a desperate for positive results Waterford coming to Dalymont and play in what looked like a renascent and a contender in these Gypsies.

Unfortunately for Keith Long side putting on his second team to front a hardened Blues side, in the end these succumbed to the push of Blues Sander Puri 20’, Stanley Aborah 24’ and Noel Hunt in the 56’ contrary to their lone score by Cristian Magerusan 15’.

Bohemians 1, Waterford 3

In County Louth Dundalk , the local Lilywhites showed off that evening the thrill of victory and agony of defeat to their guests from Dublin Saint Patrick Athletic  after the visiting Saints were in total control and leading the match. 

With an early score by Pats Conor Clifford in the 52’ minute when they thought they were to deliver an upset to their hosts, hell broke loose in Oriel Park when this 2018 Golden Boot winner Patrick Hoban on injury time score the equalizer for Dundalk.

The draw of Cork City in Dublin and the result in a tie at home for Dundalk in the last minute was enough for the Town Boys to become the league champions and lift their fourth league title in five years.

With the only Saturday match scheduled in the Showground’s between the Bit of Red Sligo Rovers and Bray Wanderers this match had a  lot of importance for the home side Rovers looking to net three points. 

As this match became a total contest with an insistent Bray Wanderers that in the end came short and became relegated to first division, for the locals scoring were Caolann McAleer 55’ and Michael Drennan  60’ and Jake Ellis 59’ for the Seagulls.
