Portland Timbers 3, Real Salt Lake 0
Providence Park, Portland, Oregon
With another
brilliant performance from the Portland Timbers initial eleven; these delivered
another one of a kind game and win over their archrivals Real Salt Lake this time
at home in Providence Park.
That despite the might
put in by Mike Petke and company, still these came close and seeing how the
Portland defensive game once again stepping up their game to deliver a prime performance
to come with a clean sheet.
As this win puts the
Portland side in fifth place with 54 points and seizing the fifth spot for the
postseason in the Western Conference, so far in the campaign in its end these
have delivered back-to-back wins in a spectacular way.
However, this win did
not come easy as the Claret and Cobalt lads came ready to put on a fight after
their monumental win in midweek over a decimated New England squad already eliminated
from playoff contention.
As these Timbers
played a wondrous game of football by making every minute and play count on
tier favor, ask that to an opportune and Larry’s Mabiala opening the score in the
15’ minute with an assist from Diego Valeri.
With a brilliant
display of teamwork and all around unity, these Timbers sure put on another performance
like the one these deliver on Rio Tinto two weeks ago when they defeated RSL by
a score of 4-1 and coming out of their on the road slump.
Still after the early
goal and lead taken by the Timbers, the visiting Utah Boys had their moments
and close opportunity with Kyle Beckerman almost delivering a double with Albert
Rusnak behind and Joao Plata missing in what almost was a clear goal.
Hail to the man of the
hour defensibly Steve Clark making another appearance in lieu of an injured
Jeff Attinella once again in the DL as well praising the Portland defensive
game that uplifted the offensive game that saw it best.
So far, for Gio
Savarese sealing another great performance of his team and delivering another
trip to the coveted postseason, he and his side have another compromise next
week against Vancouver at BC Place to close the campaign in a high note.
The second half was
to see another round of fireworks between these two titans with the visitors
looking forward to stage a comeback and maybe sealing it with a win and for Portland
to defend and stand its ground.
With a defensive gem
of a game the Timbers backfield really delivered and extending their lead with
a one two combination from Sebastian Blanco assisting brilliantly and serving a
nice pass to Diego Chara in the 68’ minute to extend the lead at 2-0.
No later Sebastian Blanco
after a near miss earlier he put the icing on the cake to seal the win and with
his go ahead goal with an assist from Lucas Melano in the 87’ to the joy of all
those 21, 444 in attendance in Providence Park.
If this type of game
continues to escalate for these hardened Portland Timbers, we may have a possible
repeat of that miracle of 2015 when the Rose City squad against all odds went all
the way to win the league title.
For now, the Portland
Timbers have earned their spot for the postseason!
