With the League of Ireland coming to its end in what seemed a contested and exciting 2018, next year promises to a better one with a couple of squads sporting new managers and welcoming UCD to the ranks of Premiership.
For Bray Wanderers a sad goodbye, a playoff for Limerick FC for their permanency or relegation and a sad ending for Derry City, as well another campaign for Sligo Rovers that barely stayed in the top association but with the promise of a promising 2019.
However, kudos for an amazing campaign for a squad that its front office directives took seriously its ascent to Premier League and deliver a wondrous campaign in Waterford FC. In addition, of seeing, a recovered Pats squad, a fighting Hoops and a promising future for the Bohs looking like a contender for next campaign.
Still for two squads will be sporting new members in their squad’s helm with the Sligo Rovers with former Saints manager Liam Buckley taking over in the Showgrounds and in Richmond the arrival of Harry Kenny in a new era in Inchicore.
In the case of the Bohemians, giving a vote of confidence and extension to Keith Long is somehow a sign of the potential that this man possesses to build a winner seen as an overall favorite to put on a shield of a campaign and a top three finish.
In the Regional Sports Centre the local Blues delivered a wondrous afternoon to their followers with a rout over visiting and troubled Limerick FC awaiting their faith in that playoff game against the Finn Harps.
With the local Waterford scorers on a doubly by Desmond Hutchinson 3’ and 63’, Garry Comerford 12’ and Gavan Holohan 70’ for Limerick lone score came by Colm Walsh O’ Loghlen in the 10’ minute.
With Liam Buckley recently named manager of the Bit O’ Red and in the stands to see what he will work with, in the end his Rovers delivered an amazing afternoon and closing with a win over the visiting Hoops.
In the Rovers Derby the Sligo side came victorious with scores from Michael Drennan 38’ and sealing the deal in the second half was John Mahon 55’ and with a defensive might the locals close with a win.
Sligo Rovers 2, Shamrock Rovers 0
With caretaker manager in the helm the Pats delivered a one of a kind goal rout over a sorry and clueless Derry City closing in the negative and looking forward to a more prolific next year campaign.
For the Saints putting a vivid offensive show over the Candystripes defense not showing off in Inchicore, Connor Clifford 29’, a double by James Donna 37’ and 57’, Kevin Toner 40’ and Jake Keegan 55’ in a goal fest in Dublin.
Saint Patrick’s Athletic 5, Derry City 0
In Turner’s Cross the Rebel Army put on a practice against relegation prone, Bray Wanderers as the former league champions are getting ready to their FAI Cup showdown against league champions Dundalk FC.
For John Caulfield seeing in his young promise in Kieran Sadlier treble in 21’, 34’ and 47’ accompanied by Gearoid Morrissey 29’ and Barry McNamee 41’ and for the Gulls lone goal by Jake Ellis 49’.
Cork City 5, Bray Wanderers 1
To conclude with the recently named League of Ireland 2018 champions Dundalk FC going to play in Dalymont Stadium in Phibsborough, easy was not the word for the Lilywhites struggling to rescue a point.
As an early score by the Bohs Dinny Corcoran in the 22’ minute, in the second half when the game was going in favor of the locals came The Town Daniel Cleary with the equalizer in the 78’ to close with a draw.
