Shamrock Rovers deny Dundalk the treble by winning the FAI Cup

Aviva Stadium once again lived the hype of one of its most contested of matches with the FAI Cup in play between the league champions Dundalk and the Shamrock Rovers, playing in the last match of the season.

With one of the Republic of Ireland most coveted of trophies, founded in 1922, this trophy is somehow considered a pioneer in a cup competition and so far, the Shamrock Rovers being its most winner with 25 shields.

This match had last season winner Dundalk FC and the Town lads looking for a treble, contrary we had the winner of most trophies with 32 years of drought that last night these broke it with pride.

Coming as heavy favorites, the Town side was looking to add another trophy to its halls at Oriel Park, contrary to the Hoops were looking at any cost to win a shield, after a meltdown in the season and surrendering to the push of the Town.

As the colossus of Dublin Lansdowne Road, showed off a nice attendance of 30,000 plus in what those in attendance were exposed to a grand and hard-fought affair labeled as one exciting since start to finish.

With two squads that competed for one against the other, the Hoops meltdown in the middle of the season became the plus for the Town Boys catapulting to the top and the rest is a well known history of the defending champions repeat.

For the Shamrock Rovers staging a successful run in the elimination rounds including a boost to their morale when they defeated their cross-town foes, the Bohs somehow uplifted this side moral high.

This was a match that the Shamrock Rovers showed a lot of initiative and almost opening the score in the game with several clear opportunities with Jack Byrne and Aaron McEnneff getting the best of the Town defense.

In the 88’ Gary Rogers was a call for the foul over the Hoops Aaron McEnneff for a penal and scoring his fourth goal for the Hoops in the season in the 89’, but for a lead that not lasted long for the Dubliners.

Still, the Town came back on injury time in the 90+3 the minute when Micheal Duffy scores the equalizer and sending this into extra minutes and into the shout out where Dundalk couldn’t hold its ground against a near perfection Shamrock Rovers winning the shield.
