The Finn Harps delivers an upset over Drogheda United

No Premiership for the Droghs as these hard fighting Harps delivers when they needed the most and keeping tabs for another season in the top football circuit of the Republic of Ireland.

In the playoff, both sides went at it but for Ollie Horgan side getting the last laugh and staying put for another campaign in the Airtricity League of Ireland, as the Harps celebrate aloud, many questions arise in Finn Park.

As Ollie Horgan cannot get by a contested season with a depleted side and despite getting some players, in the end, his side struggled and hence the results with a playoff that almost cost them their permanency in the top tier.

However, for Drogheda United hitting getting the first punch back in United Park with a win by the minimum difference in the first round by a 1-0 score and leaving their faith on the second leg at Ballybofey.

After Chris Lyons dramatic game-winner in stoppage time, the Droghs had the upper hand on the second leg to be played away at Harp Stadium, as the Droghs were looking forward to another eventful afternoon on the road.

As the levels of confidence for the Boys of Drogheda united Boys were riding high, until.

Yes, until they went to Ballybofey and face off a very determined and not so relegation to first division for these Harps this time ready and looking forward to seeing another day in the top circuit of Ireland Premier Division.

With a crowd over 2,000 at Finn Park, these really played like there was no tomorrow and the Blue and White Army did the feat by delivering a great defensive game accompanied by a clean sheet and a two-goal rout over the visiting Droghs.

Starting the rally was the Finns Mark Russell in the 7’ a minute later, as the global score tied at one goal apiece, in the end, the match being tied, it took extra time to decide it with a tiebreaker goal in the 107’ minute Harry Ashcroft score the winning goal.

A heartbreaker for Drogheda United looking forward to a return to the top circuit and saw its dreams shattered by a determined and inspired Finn Harps returning to the SSE Premier Division.

As many questions arise for manager Ollie Horgan asking for more monetary budget to build up a contender and not be a sorry entity in the end of every season fighting for its permanency in the top division.
