A Tuesday night match
in the middle of Copa America and EURO 2016 competitions, but this time the
Lamar Hunt US Open Cup was in the schedule. Here the Portland Timbers and once
again seeing themselves in a mano a mano match in the fourth round with a
familiar foe, the San Jose Quakes.
So far in this
campaign the Quakes and Timbers have put on a very tense and exciting string of
matches when they meet, with so far the PTFC winning two at home and the Quakes
doing the same at Avaya in their first encounter of the campaign.
Nothing out of the
ordinary whenever these two squads meet, despite missing several of their top
stars, still both Managers decided to put some of their starts in their initial
elevens in order to make a key advancement in this competition.
The Timbers starting
eleven saw some key moves to consider in future matches in its backfield, with
Taylor Peay, Orlando City newcomer Okugo, the middle Liam Ridgewell and in the
left Zarek Valentin to give keeper Gleeson a sound afternoon. In todays, match the Portland Boss saw in his
formation a possible indicator to use it in future league fixtures by the way
all of his greenhorns really step up the plate.
With Manager Caleb
Porter putting as usual his 4-2-3-1 formation, by using Jack Mc Inerney as the
lone striker accompanied in the back by Diego Valeri and his wingers Jack
Barmby and Dairon Aspirilla and as the defensive midfielders in Jack Jewsbury
and Ben Zemanski. Caleb Porter had his initial eleven ready to show off their
mettle as well several players looking to attract their boss attention in
future encounters.
As today, we saw a
very hungry and determined PTFC playing an awesome football as well dominant in
control of the ball all match long alongside of seeing players in Jack Barmby,
Dairon Aspirilla, Okugo and Taylor Peay showing off a very hungry and notable
game.
So far, in this
campaign, these squads have measured themselves three times in league play with
the Timbers having the upper hand. As in today’s match, there was no exception
for the Rose City squad to repeat its dose in dominating the match as well
outscoring the visiting Silicon Valley Boys in a 2-0 shutout.
With two scores as
the first one in a ricochet ball, slipping through the fingers of the Quakes
keeper and going past Mc Inerney in the line the first goal came in the 34th
minute courtesy of a Dairon Aspirilla play. No later, in the game, the PTFC had
a free kick in its favor it was their forward Jack Mc Inerney doing the honors and
in a spectacular way that play put the definitive 2-0.
At the end, the
Timbers sealed the win, assuring their next round pass, something that they are
looking forward to maintain their winning ways in order to aspire to net this prestigious
and coveted trophy into the halls of Providence Park.
Not only a great win
recorded for the PTFC showing off its might but also a message clearly shouted
across by several players looking forward to an opportunity in Manager Caleb
Porter initial eleven. One thing for sure is the competition in several
positions for the Portland opening eleven seen in upcoming matches.
At the end, the PTFC
game is back and in a little by little basis, this squad is getting their
harmony together alongside its dynamic game they are known for and that can net
them at the end of this campaign another brilliant run into the league shield.
Can this be the year
of the double or treble in a way of trophies won by the mighty PTFC, no one knows
as nothing written, still one thing for sure that was remarkable to state
in this match, was the lineup Manager Caleb
Porter put in for this match, hopefully it can be a repeat.
