A great city indeed,
when it comes to great sporting events, as New York City is well known as a
mecca or haven for whatever sport you name.
We all are aware of
the New York Yankees and Mets in Baseball, Rangers and Islanders in Hockey,
Knicks and Nets in Basketball, WNBA New York Liberty as well the Jets and Giants in Football.
Very well the
rivalries from its neighboring cities as Philadelphia, Washington DC, Chicago,
Boston and Los Angeles and San Francisco from the West Coast.
In the case of soccer,
thanks to the Big Apple diversity, soccer has embraced another event to start drawing
a great number of supporters in great numbers, as well making them even with
the likes of traditional American sports.
In the case of soccer,
thanks to the Big Apple diversity, soccer has embraced another event to start drawing
a great number of supporters in great numbers, as well making them even with
the likes of traditional American sports.
The Big Apple with
its three professional soccer squads, two in Major League Soccer and one in the
North American Soccer League, really is living to its reputation as all around sports
city.
As in the case of professional
soccer in the Big Apple, since 1996 when it started as the NY/NJ Metrostars in
the formative years of Major League Soccer, to later give way to the New York
Red Bulls in 2010 and its one of a kind venue in Harrison, New Jersey.
So far the beautiful
game has gained a popularity that is surpassing many traditional and
established American sports, due to soccer acceptance from many of these
metropolis residents.
Let’s see, after the
Metrostars became the Red Bulls as well built their soccer only playing arena
in 2010, which launched an all-around revolution in American soccer circles
that gave way to other extraordinary projects.
The New York Cosmos
arrival in the North American Soccer League became the second squad to call the
Big Apple its home, bringing along a load of promising projects.
Opening the door for
another soccer prone 25,000 seat stadium, were the Cosmos will call home in the
vicinity of New York next to Belmont Park in the border between Queens and
Nassau County.
That so far has
created some heated matches between the Red Bulls and Cosmos recently, were the
Cosmos really gave a lesson recently to its cross the pike foes, in the US Open
Cup.
Opening the door to
what many will dubbed as the Big Apple Derby, getting a third entity into the
picture with the NYCFC that will make its Major League Debut in 2015 and
temporarily call Yankee Stadium home until its venue is built.
Three and counting,
with the Red Bulls, Cosmos and now NYCFC, the Big Apple will be well
represented in the beautiful sport as well housing two soccer venues and a constellation
of superstar players along a series of exciting and nerve racking derbies.
This is the way
Soccer will perform its magic, Big Apple style along the lights of Broadway and
its many tricks along 5th avenue and its upcoming headlines from
America’s top soccer Trifecta.
