NYCFC 1, NY Red Bulls 1
Yankee Stadium, New York
With a game ending in a tie for both NYCFC and their cross the Hudson foes the New York Red Bulls, these kicking off the opening of Major League Soccer prime weekend dubbed as Rivalry Week.
For the Red Bulls opening the scoreboard via nice backwards header by who else than Bradley Wright Phillips the Bulls utmost scorer in the 37’ minute assisted by Daniel Royer and Tyler Adams to put the giant of the Bronx in total silence and disbelief.
In addition of the NYCFC seeing their newcomer Eloi Amagat getting a red card and leaving them with just ten men to face off a hardened Red Bulls looking forward to come off with the three points and the always delightful bragging rights.
Still the return of David Villa to the NYCFC staring eleven was the highlight and near a possible score in the first half, as his presence for sure uplifted the residents of the Bronx, that despite being down a goal the fight from the American version of the Sky Blues never stopped.
This until minute 52’ minute when the NYCFC came together with Maxi Moralez and Jo Inge Berget combined to deliver a wonderful ball to David Villa who did not hesitated to score the equalizer despite his squad being down to ten men.
In the end, the outcome of this match as expected became a total contest and despite the draw, I do praise the likes of the NYCFC who in the 73’ minute saw another of its players getting a red card and leaving the Sky Blues with nine men in the pitch.
I mean a contest of high quality and many yellow cards for both sides and the locals netting two reds and despite being down, in the end these persevere for the draw and both squads were getting their fair share of points.
In the end if this match showed its dose of passion and all around contest from both squads looking forward to net the win, in the end we are bracing to a more contests in many fronts as several of the so called Derbies.
Now after the match we are looking forward to the Texas Derby between the Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas, the new contest in Tinsel Town dubbed El Traffico between the LA Galaxy and LAFC, the 401 Derby between the Toronto FC and Montreal Impact.
Adding to the list the Rocky Mountain Cup between the Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake, the Southern Derby Orlando SC and Atlanta United and the Granddaddy of all MLS contests the Cascadia Derby between the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders scheduled for Sunday.
Still thanks to today’s matchup between these two titans in the Big Apple we are given a preview of what is to come this upcoming weekend in what the league calls it Rivalry Week and for good reason these rivalries are raising the bar across the MLS.
