What a campaign the
Seagulls are putting on, with a rare Monday night match scheduled at Carlisle
Grounds, as the locals put on a show and defeated a renovated and resilient
Drogheda United.
The visiting Drogs
after their recent first division promotion, they are determined of not going
back to relegation as well looking forward to a stellar campaign.
After the visitors strong
start in this edition of the Airtricity League, with a back-to-back opening
wins over Galway United and Saint Patrick’s, the Drogs Boss stated after the
win over the Dubliners that they were going to win the league.
Their start became overshadow
in week three with an ugly loss at home playing the league favorite and tough Cork
City, that brought the recently promoted Drogheda United squad, a dose of
reality check in Premiership.
Still coming to this
parts of Ireland and play at the Grounds and against a renovated and hungry squad
that in last campaign showed off its potential and hunger of disputing the top
four spots in the league overall table if not the top.
For the Gulls Boss
Harry Kenny it was business as usual and after that hurtful loss at Dalymont
Park in Dublin, against the local Bohemians by a just one goal.
The need of rallying
his troops and get them back into the positive streak, became one major necessity
as well putting in danger his squad unbeaten streak at home.
As his squad was
compromised to put in display a one of a kind football all evening long, very
well not allowing the visitors any liberties of displaying their game and the
way of playing in a comfortably.
Like them and all of the
SSE squads sporting just having a couple days rest after their scheduled Friday’s
compromises, the task did not looked easy but was not difficult.
For the Bray bunch,
after their streak halted abruptly by the Gypsies in Dublin, their aims were to
net a win as well three points of gold that could put them in the hunt for the
top spot in the overall table held by the Rebel Army with twelve points.
So far, the match
exposed a very ambitious and confident Gull initial eleven, with both Aaron Greene
and Dylan Connolly, exposing the visitors defense and cruising in what seemed
an easy win.
With open opportunities
after the other for the locals seeking to extend their lead and get the go ahead
goals in various intents and the Drogs captain Luke Gallagher sent off in the
25th minute.
Things were going the
Bray Wanderers way as the first half belonged to them and even in the second half
their dominance became evident once again and thanks ot the home field
advantage and support of their followers.
The Seagulls were
hoping for another pair of goals and despite their near misses, the game
continue developing into their side, although they saw how the Droghs were polluting
on a fight and with an all-around persistence all evening long.
As the visitors keeper
Stephen McGuinness became the hero for his side after stopping a series of probable
goals and seeing his squad fell prey to the fury of the locals putting on a
rout or a goal fest that prevented it by this chap.
The honor goal scored
by the visitors came by the Droghs defender Ciaran McGuigan, cutting the locals
who led in the match, at the end, the local Gulls persevered for the win and
earning three points of gold.
At the end, an excellent
display of good football to its faithful and for one of its honorable guests in
attendance, Republic of Ireland Boss Martin O’ Neill a good football in its
entire ninety minutes.
