In a defensive gem, just a share of points for Portland and SKC

Portland Timbers 0, Sporting Kansas City 0
Providence Park, Portland, Oregon

Nothing for nobody but a share of a points for both Portland Timbers and the leaders of the Western Conference Sporting Kansas City, with a scoreless tie at zero goals. However when the Midwest Boys come to town, we are to brace for a very tight defensive showdown.

Today with the Portland Timbers missing notable players in their initial eleven, still the improvisations made by Giovanni Savarese worked marvelously, despite the home squad coming close a few times but no cigar.

So far, with not seeing again in the lineup Liam Ridgewell, Alvas Powell both on the DL and with their wizard in the defensive midfield Diego Chara out with accumulation of yellow cards, the Timbers substitutes performed!

Under Giovanni Savarese the levels of confidence he and his coaching staff are injecting to all of their players, suddenly with both starters and substitutes, in today’s game these delivered despite not seeing a single goal in the scoreboard.

With Marco Farfan as the novelty in the defensive backfield and Lawrence Olum playing in lieu of a suspended Diego Chara, both of these made a great impression and played as expected not allowing any liberties to the opposing team.

Still for the Portland Timbers, with today’s result these continue with their unbeaten run extending it to eight matches with today’s draw at home and a match in the US Open Cup against Los Angeles Galaxy before the league two week break for the World Cup.

Also that caught my attention was the inclusion of Eryk Williamson, Modou Jadama and Dairon Aspirilla, this latter one retuning to game time eighteen roster and later on coming on as a substitute along with Modou Jadama.

Another notable point for the Portland Timbers is the likes of Andres Flores in two back to back matches he always does his signature shoot in the early minutes as he did to the Galaxy and today against SKC. Adding another notable in Cristhian Paredes, these two set in the starting lineup and leading Lawrence Olum to supply all three of them a one of a kind performance.

Stopping the likes of SKC Roger Espinoza Illie Sanchez and despite seeing a close play in the 40th minute when Daniel Salloi ball hitting the crossbar for the close scare the Timbers defense amazed in how the ball took a bounce in their favor.

Despite SKC stingy approach, this time their Catenacio style of defending like last year match in Providence turn out differently with Diego Valeri making several shoots and that close call on Adi’s header.

Overall, this campaign we are brace to see a new style and approach to the game from the Rose City squad, under a positive streak, manager Savarese plans on the break to make some corrections as well prepare to a more contested month of July.

For the Portland Timbers returning to MLS action until June 24, their next match in the USOC will be on Friday June 15 at Providence Park hosting the LA Galaxy.
