Cork City 4, Derry City 2
Turner's Cross, Cork City
With a lone match scheduled in the SSE Premiership on Monday, the Rebel Army delivered at home a goal rout that delivered a valuable win over a struggling Derry City. This win briefly allows the Leesiders to take over the top by just a point lead over their archrivals Dundalk FC.
By facing a hardened and suddenly slumping Derry City, but without taking any chances per City manager John Caulfield looking forward for his side to keep an unbeaten streak and dominance at home.
So far, recording back-to-back wins in the weekend and on Monday night with seven goals scored in two matches against Waterford and now Derry City, these two squads considered, as not so easy, the City Boys are back in the top.
On Monday, the Leesiders delivered another gem of a match despite the opposition in the visiting Candystripes, as these overcome and delivered after a near sold out attendance in Turner’s Cross who got a delight by both squads goal fest.
For Cork City is becoming a custom that in every match we have one of his players scoring a double set of goals -in this match Karl Sheppard this time delivering with two goals on the 7 and 46 minutes, after Karl Sheppard early score sent the home side on the plus.
After halftime, Karl Sheppard opened against the scoreboard in the early minutes, putting the home side ahead with two goals lead, then followed by Kieran Sadlier 71 and Graham Cummins 83 to seal the deal with a notable win.
For Kieran Sadlier and Graham Cummins scores in the second half put them as leaders in individual scoring with 14 goals each and keeping a close tab on Dundalk Patrick Hoban with 15 making interesting in the Golden Boot Race in the SSE.
With fifty points just a lone point lead over Dundalk, once again the defending champions are back in their rightful place until them or the De Town will give in this heated race to the top.
In addition of netting a couple of wins in the weekend, the news of their monetary compensations if these make a good run in the UEFA Champions League elimination rounds, can sum a payment up to €800,000 Euros, not bad for some playing time. As the Leesiders are to wait for the first round draws for both Champions and Europa Leagues, scheduled on June 19.
For now, the name of the game is consistency in winning and keeping a strong attitude in what seems to be a much-contested campaign were these underestimated their competition with Waterford and especially Dundalk being a pester and now maintain their lead at the top of the league.
The heats is on but for now this win and the spot City is situated currently is somehow a confidence boost in the remainder of the campaign were it promises to be its levels of competition steeping up a notch.
