Costa Rica 3, North Ireland 0
Estadio Nacional, San Jose, Costa Rica
A draw and a loss is the result for the North Ireland National Team after their Central American tour and two matches against Panama and Costa Rica. The Green and White Army manager Michael O’ Neill, based on his experience and observations he got a good taste of what to work.
The man is aware of the upcoming challenges he has with this squad with tis majority of players passing their prime but still putting on a fight until that match in San Jose were these put on a test from Mother Nature.
With the incessant heat in these parts of Central America and playing against a completely sold out Estadio Nacional, the entire Norn iron exposed to may frailties in its initial eleven, but the outlook of a promissory future is within its manager reach.
Not easy, the tasks ahead for manager Michael O’ Neill and company but the way he gave the excellent opportunity to several youths in his initial eleven, his levels of confidence area within of building an all-around contender in the future.
After their tie at zero goals in Panama colossus of Rommel Fernandez, coming back to San Jose the reality of a contested match with a very inspired and hungry Ticos squad that showed off in their goal rout this squad erroneous points.
Still this match had a lot of historical connotations when the Norn Iron manager when manager Mark O’ Neill aligned in the same initial eleven the likes of two brothers in Corry and Jonny Evans joined by Ryan and Conor McLaughlin, this seen as a first in the Norn Iron.
So far, in this tour the positive to highlight was the incursion in this match against Costa Rica of goalkeeper Conor Hazard and in the Panama math with three in goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, midfielder Jordan Thompson and striker Shayne Lavery. The unfortunate side of not using in this match other young guns ready to get their feet wet in Paul Smyth and Gavin Whyte not used.
For the Norn Iron seeing how their future men in the pitch are responding and with more minutes played maybe we cans see their best in the future, as these are to become one day the ones to carry the weight of this team.
At the end you may blame the heat or the stadium ambience but this match despite being a loss for the Norn Iron for sure left many constructive ideas to implement in the future for manager Michael O’ Neill.
As the man is to see why is defensive game became so feeble and exposed to the push of the local Costa Ricans and its lack of scoring drive despite being on the nose in corners and set plays to score, at the end this match uncovered many weakness to correct.
For him seeing the new blood coming with and showing off their spirits and despite not having enough time, these showed promise in the future of this national squad. As many players aging and in need of new faces to start a new revolution in North Ireland football.
