Dundalk 3, Derry City 2
Oriel Park, Dundalk
On a rare Tuesday night in the League of Ireland, this match scheduled in the colossus of Louth Oriel Park, for the local Lilywhites after having a dominating match in its entirety, in the end these had a narrow escape.
As this squad is doing, well after a valuable and important Friday night win on the road and where else than their house of horrors Turner’s Cross were they end their drought and deliver a heartbreaking loss to Cork City.
Not only with today’s loss, these extended their lead but also they are closing in on another league title with another notable win this time over league foes Derry City.
The Town lads in this campaign are putting on an all-around fight, one that has its results is visibly shown and nearing on another trophy to their halls, by taking advantage of a tough campaign the Rebel Army is having.
With today’s win over the Derry Boys, puts them on the lead in the top with 12 whooping points and with 4 matches left to play in this edition of the Airtricity League of Ireland, these Lilywhites are to claim another of this league top honors.
However the rally started early by the local Town side, with a nice corner taken by Chris Benson and Daniel Clearly head it home for the locals first goal and sending the half-filled stadium into a frenzy in the 16’ minute.
Still the evening was to belong to the soon to be crowned champions, as the play starting on Dundalk side and along pass getting it by Michael Duffy on the left side with a long pass to an opportune and well-situated Patrick McEleney.
Four minutes passed by after Dundalk first goal and McEleney scoring his side second goal in the 20’ minute and putting the score at 2-0 and with no danger in sight from the visiting Derry City not showing any signs of a comeback.
For Stephen Kenny and his side this match was not over yet and looking for more, in the 44’ minute it’s when Dundalk top striker Patrick Hoban on his way to become the league top scorer and Golden Boot winner.
As his strike outside the area in the left side, sending a shoot that Candystripes goalkeeper Gerard Doherty despite his efforts of trying to stop the ball in the end this made it to the back of the nets for the locals extending their lead before the end of halftime.
This play once again Michael Duffy became the culprit by passing to a wide open Patrick Hoban and taking a couple of defenders he made his shoot and the Lilywhites number nine man extended his lead atop the scoring table with his 25 goal.
As they, state it is not over until tis over and in the second half after a good dominance and despite three shoots just managed by the Candystripes, one managed to hit gold but before that, the local’s defense made a boboo.
With Dundalk defender, Dean Jarvis in the 69’ own goal broke the clean sheet and later substitute Ben Fisk scored the second goal and putting the Candystripes within a goal but in the 88’ minute but a little too late their reaction.
This Friday Dundalk will face off in the FAI Cup semifinal against UCD, but until they make it official with their 12 points lead and 25 goals differential in their favor, the Town for sure calls this edition champions.
