There is life after Stephen Kenny in the Vinnie Perth era start in a plus

Cork City 1, Dundalk 2
Turners Cross Field, Cork City

The Vinnie Perth era got to a positive start in Rebel territory. A 2-1 wins over their archrivals Cork City in the Presidents Cup. For manager Vinnie Perth he could not ask for a better start. With big shoes to fill, the first year man in the helm of Dundalk is looking forward to a prolific and successful 2019.

For this first match of the campaign, the plaudits abound for Perth and company. After all these defeated a worthy foe in the Leesiders and beating them at home. We can state how serious this squad to see a successful defense of their hard fought title.

This win stopped the Leesiders momentum in their quest of winning a fourth title in a consecutive way. In spite of the Lilywhites playing in always-tough Turners Field, still the determination their initial eleven showed in all match gave us a preview of what to expect from the defending champions.

As the action of this match saw the initiative and opportune timing, the Town players had in both their scoring drives. A set play on a corner kick taken by Michael Duffy on the 36th and see his efforts crowned by Dane Massey to open up the score.

As a crowd of no more than 2600, spectators on hand to witness both sides contest in what seems a highly celebrated rivalry in the League of Ireland. The fight did not stopped for these hardened visitors looking at any cost to double their lead.

As the Lilywhites by doubling their lead in the near end on injury time when Michael Duffy again present in the play that define the game for his side, when he found Patrick Hoban heading what became the game winner.

Dundalk with a commanding two goals ahead the game going into halftime, still 45 minutes separated the defending champions for their feat. As manager Perth aware of seeing an all-around, contest in the second half.

For manager John Caulfield rallying his troops in the locker room, the prospects of a comeback was within the Leesiders. However, the City clan was not ready to go down without a fight. As the Rebel Army Boss making his trademark moves, finally they paid off. When substitute Kevin O’ Connor suddenly he started making some noise in the Leesiders game.

For the former Preston North End player his manager move really paid off for the City squad. With a brilliantly executed free kick the man, deliver the honor goal in the 65’ minute to break the Lilywhites clean sheet.

For the Lilywhites taking all sorts of pressure and counter play from the home side, in the end, these persevered for the win and winning the Presidents Cup not won since 2015. Now both squads are to prepare for their league openers.

As Cork City will travel to Richmond Park in Dublin to face Saint Patrick’s Athletic and for Dundalk these open at home in Oriel Park against Sligo Rovers.
