A much-disputed match between the Candy Stripes and Rebel Army

I mean neck to neck is what both squads’ went at it, at Turners Cross, in a match that had all the essence of a final or a league shield in play. Seeing how a belligerent and a resurgent Derry City looking like a contender in this edition of the Airtricity League of Ireland is playing a one of a kind football.

Many are seeing the lads of the Cumann Peile Chathair Dhoire or Candystripes ready for league prime time and possibly the shield. Still its too early to say and one thing for Derry City Manager is to free all of the obstacles ahead with his squad and maintain a winning pace.

Especially when you are playing a top of the line squad and being your host, known for its aggressiveness and insistence when it sees itself behind on the scoreboard. Something the Cumann Peile Chathair Chorcaí or Cork City is known in league circles as a foe not to mess with and play with all the precautions possible.

After a good turnout seen at Turners Cross Field, were both squads followers got their moneys worth, after being expose to a top of the line football and a great spectacle.

The match started with both squads being a bit cautious and defensive, still on the visiting side a very determined Danish defender in Niclas Vemmelund scored in the 56th minute to put the score one up for the Candystripes.

Still the Rebel Army is one mighty fighter and never gives up on his quest to perfection and hoping to make a successful stand against their arch rivals the Dundalk Boys so far atop the league table.

As the Leesiders Boss John Caulfield making some accurate moves in his initial eleven, substituting Steven Beattie with Daniel Morrisey, Caulfields gamble proved too valuable as Morrisey immediate presence was felt by scoring the equalizer in the 86th minute.

A game that saw the visiting Derry City chaps netting a total of three yellow cards, was not in the mind of their Manager Kenny Shiels- very well seeing his side suddenly seeing how the Leesiders took over the reigns of this match.

Its when Kenneth Browne took advantage of a slip up by the Candystripes defense and score in injury time the go ahead and at the end the game winning goal for the City chaps. With this win, the Rebel Army pulls within four points close and in striking distance of first place and defending champions Dundalk FC.

With the Leesiders going to play at City Calling Stadium in Longford Town, for Manager John Caulfield will be another test for his Boys to net a win and continue their chase for the league top spot and take it away from the Lilywhites.

For Derry City to continue their ascent and adding points to stay close on their chase for second spot, their next rival in Bray Wanderers Seagulls, who are looking a bit desperate for points, and Candystripes Boss this compromise will be seen as a total challenge.

As Derry City Manager Kenny Shiels learned his lesson in not underestimating his rivals regardless of their position in the table as he did with Cork City. That after the score their game became a bit laid back and their rivals taking advantage of the situation.

As their next match against the Seagulls, they have to play them a bit more seriously.
At the end this match had the essence of netting a weekly award for its top of the line football exhibited by both squads in the pitch. Giving the Leesiders the edge and overall win.
