No miracle at Turners Field as City succumb to a top class act Genk

Nothing but a heartache, for the Leesiders and its followers, after seeing their eleven falling prey to a visiting KRC Genk, who displayed a one of a kind and spectacular football. As the visiting Belgians came all prepared to front, an offensive and attacking Rebel Army, poised to mount the lone score of 1-0 at Luminous Arena.

On the return game, the main goal for City Boss was to play a very defensive game and overpower the Belgian side as well look to add a couple of goals to seal the deal and maintain the European dream alive. If not the possibility of a gamble by Manager John Caulfield to front the challenge of the penalty kicks if the score would end in a draw.

The unfortunate side that this did not happen as the visitors came prepared to put on a show and add more misery to their hosts with that damaging away goal rule that the visitors took in their advantage very intelligently.

As the return match, the Leesiders Boss repeated the same lineup, despite the struggles some of his strikers suffered, the prospect of putting new blood in his lineup to front a hardened Genk, was null and a the end the consequences were seen.

Still this will be an all-around experience for the Manager John Caulfield, as his persistence did not paid off this time and saw his side flee prey to the constant attacking and ambitious counter attack of the visiting Belgian Boys.

As the tale of the tape in this match showed off how the visitors really put their boss blueprint in practice, buy outshooting City 20 times over 10 of the home team and with more dangerous moves but for the locals the chances were 3 to 1.

With the Leon Baileys constant harassment over the Rebel Army keeper, the thirteenth minute proved lethal for the home team as swell a bit unlucky when an unmarked Thomas Buffel Genk Captain, pushed the ball for the 1-0.  Not before the first half when defender Sebastian Dewaest push the ball for the 2-0 before the first half ended.

Once again Genk started the hostilities and opened the scoreboard, giving its eleven a boost that continue throughout the first half , as City woes went from bad to worst with a play that many in attendance booed when the ref interfered with it. Despite the hard luck, the Leesiders managed some decent plays in the 30th minute before halftime.

As the second half saw a new Cork City playing a more aggressive football, it came on the 63rd a nice header by Alan Bennett who beat the visitors keeper for the 2-1 and the frenzy that Turners Field lived shortly until the match final whistle.

As the saying states, you learn from your mistakes and this past Europa League experience was an excellent one for the Leesiders who put out on a show in the first rounds of this event and made their followers dream of reaching to the stars.

Imagine seeing the Rebel Army in the stage group, its attainable and not impossible as this squad currently second to Dundalk in Airtricity League, with a sure stay in the top spots we can see another repeat of this group feats.
