Score one for the Portland
bunch, netting an important win over their conference and Cascadia foes, the
Vancouver Whitecaps, after their amazing win a week ago over the league
defending champions Seattle Sounders.
Many thought that the
Caps were going to put a damp on the Portland Timbers party in Providence Park
after last week defeat the locals endured from a very defensive and dominating
Sporting Kansas City squad.
However, in today’s match,
the Portland Timbers Boss Caleb Porter did some moves in his initial eleven
that at the end worked wonders for the Rose City squad.
One by netting an important
win, the Portland Boys are situated firmly in first place in the Western Conference
with 16 points two up their closest chasers the Dallas FC squad.
Very well this time
not being caught off guard with a defensive scheme as Manager Porter stated it
in his press conference that the Caps were looking to use the same one like their
Midwest foes applied to them.
This time they were
ready and with a new faces in his initial eleven and the return of Liam
Ridgewell and Vytas Andreskevicious to the defensive backfield, the Timbers
moves came in his goalie Jeff Attinella in place of Jake Gleeson and Dairon Aspirilla
for Sebastian Blanco.
For a suspended Adi
came the former Vancouver forward Darren Mattock who sealed the deal for his
squad with a nice finish to beat his former teammate David Ousted for what proved
to be the go ahead goal and winner for the locals.
As we are aware of the
Cheesmaster all around moves in his eleven, the way this played today was a total
difference from last week performance were his offensive attack was completely shut
down and fouls galore and few opportunities to shoot to goal.
Discard that this
week, whenever these squads stage the always contested and exciting Cascadia
Derbies, part one of three the Timbers will play against the Caps and the same against
their Interstate 5 foes the Seattle Sounders.
The Timbers got the
upper hand today and got a set of three points of gold, valuable in their conference
of play as well in the standings of the Cascadia Cup competition.
With the Rose City
squad drawing first blood from the Caps and now being in the lead of this inner
competition, the Cascadia Cup staged by the league three Pacific Northwest squads.
In addition that this
squad had a dandy of an afternoon dubbed as a Saturday matinee with a match
scheduled at one o clock and another classical sold out we are accustomed to
have in the colossus of Morrison street, Providence Park.
The high level of
decibels were heard all over this wonderful city when Darlington Nagbe after
beating Matias Laba and sending a one of a kind shoot that the game announcer could
not believe his eyes and just dubbed it as “sensational”.
No later, the Timbers
Boys started another break and this time a triangle of a play between David
Guzman to Diego Valeri who centered the ball for Darren Mattocks to push the
football to mark the second goal of the match.
As always, the incompetent
officials marred the Portland Timbers- Vancouver Whitecaps match, and with a non-existent
penal of Alva’s Powell over Freddy Montero, the Caps capitalized on the occasion.
Still the miss by
Freddy Montero and the Timbers keeper Atinella prevented the score, with the
rebound rapidly taken by the Colombian and former Sounder to push the ball in
the 56 minute for the 2-1 score and the local squad dismay by kissing the clean
sheet goodbye.
Today’s win, shows
off a new squad in the Portland Timbers, with each of its players showing off a
new determination and hunger to win for their Boss Caleb Porter and keeping a
great start a first since this squad inception to MLS.
Now for Portland going
on the road to face off the only undefeated squad in the league Dallas FC, this
will be another challenge for the Rose City squad and later going to Silicon
Valley and play a hardened San Jose Quakes.
