The Portland Timbers need to step up its game

They state defense wins games, so far in the campaign the Portland Timbers have exposed an area that ever since their inception to Major League Soccer they have a big need of addressing. Still let us not dramatize or point fingers, after a negative start the Rose City club has endured in this nascent campaign.

So far, exposing many negatives and lack of ambition and hunger to win in the field, at times the club playing just 45 minutes when you should do it in its entire ninety minutes. Very well playing with heart and without any complex to whoever comes at you after a horrific succumb in New York to a second string team.

Still I believe, I do see this crisis turning around for the better but with some drastic moves in the initial eleven, as one Timbers player in an interview show his desires of making a move to a more dynamic formations and leave their traditional 4-2-3-1 behind.

I mean if Gio would like to start his experimentation as he did it in New York until he found the right formula, why not a 4-4-2 start or 4-3-3 formations to see results in the offensive scheme, stepping up the competing internally. On the other hand, maybe with his defensive woes that successful 3-6-1 that gave him many satisfactions with the Cosmos.

Using more the speed and technique of Samuel Armenteros with the push and dynamic of Adi we can have a scoring machine in these two. Dairon Aspirilla alongside Sebastian Blanco and Diego Valeri he is a great asset and showed off in the preseason, giving him more minutes.

Another asset to consider will be Victor Arboleda willing to prove this time in the top circuit and already showing off his mettle in the preseason with a just and solid stament of being ready!

Defensively speaking where is Bill Tuiloma, Julio Cascante, Andres Flores and Modou Jadama?
In Goalkeepers Jake Gleeson, a minor injury and Atinella sporting a quad have marred playing time, but performing Gleeson does deliver an acceptable, but in this case why not give Kendall Mc Intosh the opportunity for more starting minutes.

These chaps are up and ready to see some minutes in action and maybe deliver when they get the nod, still this is not an easy endeavor for both players and new manager. To adapt to a new style, for the returning veterans as well the newcomers trying to make an impact in the starting lineup.

This early start of the campaign has exposed this squad many needs but it is not the end of the world as these remedy with work and manager Savarese is hard in trying to implement some changes but with time will be seen results.

As you recall in one of my posts in the presentation of the man from Venezuela, he never promised shields but hard work, so do not blame him as he is looking to build a total contender from scratch.

To blame players will be a bit immature and unjust, they are only human and with the mishaps these showed in the past two matches the need to communicate is elemental and they need to implement it.  The mystic of unity and brethren in the field will elevate this club game for the better.

Portland in the upcoming three matches with a couple of wins and maybe a draw, these results can prove beneficial and boost this club confidence ahead of what seems to be a contested season ahead.

This squad will overcome its early season blues and start delivering more memorable and fun filled afternoons, the week bye will prove a positive step for the PTFC and return to play honoring its moniker of almighty!
