Hail to the trophy
laden Cork City Leesiders and their one of a kind campaign filled with plenty
of high notes and foursome of shields to adorn the halls of Turners Cross,
highlighting an awesome campaign.
After an undefeated
start of the campaign the Rebel Army did put on a show and exhibited one of its
ultimate of weapons in Sean Maguire, before his departure to England’s
Championship, these were invincible and Maguire unstoppable.
A campaign were John Caulfield and company put
an abrupt stop to their cross country foes Dundalk successful championship run
for three successive campaigns and this time his City side claim the ultimate
of prizes.
Still the struggles
came after the Maguire and O’ Connor went to Preston North End and the squad
felt the burden of not having the likes of their star striker putting their championship
aspiration on peril, but at the end, these prevailed.
Getting rid of a couple of their top-notch
players was not an easy endeavor.
Give an A to
Caulfield notable trophies achievement in this campaign with not only the
Aitricity Shield but also the Presidents, Munster and FAI Cups to the comfort
of their followers in what many see this as a small entity cup and this time
they stood tall.
Despite the parade
and celebrations these events come accompanied with, Caulfield is already
planning how will he stand in the next campaign and make it attractive to many
important players to play here in Cork City as many of them in need of new contracts.
However not only in
the men’s side Cork City celebrated but on the girls side too, as these
wondrous lasses did the feat of delivering a piece of silverware home in the colossus
of Curragh Road and Turners Cross.
As next campaign for
the Rebel Army will be one filled with plenty of challenges with the defense of
their league shield and FAI Cup as well another one will be the performance they
are about to do on their new adventure in the next edition of the UEFA
Champions League.
In addition, of
winning the league shield and deposing the dominant Dundalk Lilywhites for sure
next campaign will have our full attention the derbies these stage as this is already
an all-around rivalry between these two clubs.
For now, Cork City
will celebrate their amazing achievement in what many saw a dream of a campaign.
Next year will be one
of multiple challenges for the directives of City and its Boss John Caulfield
as he will be seeing several of his championship team leave to other entities,
as defender Ryan Delaney on loan from Burton Albion is up.
Leaving a big hole in
the backfield for the Leesiders also looking they are on their way out are Greg
Bolger and Karl Sheppard are going back to the Shamrock Rovers and Steven
Beattie playing his last match as a Rebel.
Despite the mind
breaking Cork City top brass is going underway to see a continuance of their dominance
in the league of Ireland as well defend their shield successfully as well
looking for a second consecutive one, the City U-17 lads can be the answer to
Caulfield dilemma.
Unfortunately, this
will be a project for the long haul.
My hats off to a one
of kind start of 21 matches won without a loss, losing both league of Ireland
top striker and scoring leader Sean Maguire and U-21 Kevin O’ Connor and Captain
John Dunleavy to injury would been catastrophic but this squad hold on its ground.
At the end curtain
calls in this 2017 edition of the League of Ireland with a new, king in the
cork City Leesiders, congratulations on a grand campaign and until 2018.
