Welcome to Rose City Giovanni Savarese

A new era has begun under the Portland Timbers helm with Giovanni Savarese coming to Rose City with an impressive CV under his arm after making of the New Cosmos an armada not to mess with in the new NASL.

With three soccer bowls won and a second place finish, the native from Venezuela under his first managerial stint, he return this club greatness from the old days of that original North American Soccer League.

What can you ask a man that in his playing days made all sorts of headlines and now as a manager echoing in his tenure in the once almighty Cosmos a squad that once had such luminaries as Pele, Carlos Alberto, Giorgio Chinaglia and the Kaiser Franz Beckenbauer.

That during his time in the Big Apple he developed a talented group of young guns as well having in his ranks the likes of former Real Madrid star Raul in his initial lineup and being a sort of spoiler for MLS squads in several US Open Cup competitions.

After leaving a winning legacy, not bad for man not coming without any previous managerial experience, by winning several shields and juggling both GM and managerial duties in the Cosmos, netting many  achievements.

This made many squads in Major League Soccer to start looking for his services after displaying his all-around determination and hunger that accompanies his offensive minded game that can deliver many successful afternoons for any squad.

His new aims were to look forward to new challenges and new endeavors.

Today was the day that Giovanni Savarese officially presented as the new manager of the Portland Timbers by Team owner Merritt Paulson and GM/ President of Operations Gavin Wilkinson and with the punctuality, that characterizes this team.

The presentation and getting this new era under way, gave way to a press conference highlighted by the charisma of manager Savarese instituting all sorts of confidence and optimism ahead of a new campaign were the Portland squad and its followers will be looking forward.

As the club GM Gavin Wilkinson stated in how the interview process he and owner Merritt Paulson went through, they stated the way this man fit the mold in because of many traits this man possessed.

Still this was not an easy decision for these two top directives when they had another man in their list in Marc Dos Santos headlining a very extensive CV accompanied by many accomplishments in the US and abroad.

In Giovanni, the Portland Timbers had their man, after all, he is no stranger in Portland as he described coming to Nike Town in Beaverton as well being a broadcaster in ESPN matches.

Making him a bit knowledgeable in the Portland Timbers game and achievements as well being very familiar through you tube and other videos of this team passionate and one of a kind fan base considered in league circles as the tops.

Very well describing what kind of game he will institute in Rose City squad by making his squad a very dominant one in the field by keeping possession of the ball in the course of the whole match as well seeing in each individual in his initial eleven stepping up their game.

Ever since his arrival in Portland, the man has been a busy bee and already in contact with several of the club veteran players in Diego Chara, Diego Valeri and Faneando Adi, and still he has way too much to do in the upcoming draft, looking for new players and opening training camp.

At the end, Giovanni Savarese will have his hand full after inheriting a winning squad after last year heartbreaking elimination in semifinals by the Houston Dynamo due to elemental players injured.

Still for the new Timbers Boss among one of his characteristics is hard work and displaying  his sincerity after asked if he was here to deliver championships by answering that he was not among his promises and he is here to work.

As his first words were finally being here and this being the right time to take the job to a club that possess the right philosophy that became the right fit for him with the ambition the club and its fervent fan base were enough for him to make Portland his new endeavor.
