Start of the year activity recap in the North Ireland Football League


The end of a streak for Ballymena United that became an opportunity to jump in first by the Linfield Blues stretching their winning streak as well the Crusaders seeing their positive streak paying off. 

A first of the year week were many squad continue on their winning ways and with the league coming to its final months, this contest for many squads is far from over in the NIFL at the contrary it is in its beginning.

For the defending champions the Crues these delivered a fatal blow to the likes of Ballymena United in Seaview were the Hachetmen are within three points of the top spots and looking forward to a race with Linfield.

In a goal fest were the Cures scorers were Paul Heatley on the double 6’ and 86’ and Kyle Owens 29’ minute, were enough to seal the deal and for the Sky Blues Jude Winchester 25’ and Steven McCullough 64’.

Crusaders 3, Ballymena United 2

For Institute going to the Showgrounds in Newry, the local city lads almost started a rally after a penalty awarded in the 50’ minute taken care by  Dale Montgomery and erasing the clean sheet for Stute.

As the visiting Institute seeing a continuance of their winning streak with a double once again by Michael McCrudden in the 12’ and 43’ P, this goal were enough for the win and for a chap coveted by some of the League of Ireland squads.

The Swifts recorded their first away win of this campaign with a win over Glentoran in the Oval; in a goal fest, the visiting Dungannon side recorded a valuable victory in their quest of salvation. 

The Swifts with scores from Daniel Hughes 44’, William Garrett (OG) 52’, Mark Patton 57’ and Paul McElroy 76’  for the local Glens Steven Gordon 42’ and John Herron 79’. 

Glentoran 2, Dungannon 4

In Mourneview Park, an inspired Phillip Donelly delivering with a treble upset the local Lurgan Blues, derailing them in their aims to move up the overall table, and seeing how the Crues leapfrog them to third place.

With Phillip Donelly of the Point scoring on the 40’, 49’ and the 75’ minutes, contrary to Glenavon lone score and coming short of a rally in the 87’ minute by Josh Daniels. 

Glenavon 1, Warrenpoint Town 3

In the Showgrounds of Coleraine, the local Bannsiders continue with their unbeaten run and delivering another loss to the visiting Reds with a goal rout as well the locals moving up the table.

For Coleraine with scores from Eion Bradley 20’, Stephen Lowry 21’, Aaron Canning 74’ and James McLoughlin 88’ for Cliftonville the lone score came from Liam Bagnall 69’ minute.

In the Bangor Fuels Arena the local Red and Blue was looking to extend their winning streak and with Linfield in town, these had the idea of delivering an all-around upset but in the end, the blues were far superior in their game. 

With Jimmy Callacher on the double in the 58’ and 75’ the visiting Belfast side raise to the occasion and won a match that catapult them to first place in the league overall table to first and with a point lead over the Sky Blues.
