Not bad of a first year the Waterford Blues had this past 2018, raising all expectations for a recently promoted club and putting in display a top of the line campaign that net them the unthinkable of a possible European spot.
This is something that never crossed into manager Alan Reynolds mind or envisioned a good run in the course of this past campaign but with a few if’s and buts, that in the end a strong fourth place finish is somehow a reason to show off.
However, the Blues had a run for the league top in the early parts of the campaign with current league champions Dundalk and then defending champions Cork City, for the top spots and occupying in the majority of the campaign third spot.
For a club that its front office went on the arduous task to build a squad to maintain themselves in the big circuit of the Premier Division, surprising everyone in football circles and soccer oenophiles in the Emerald Isle.
By getting a handful of notable players to play at the Regional Sports Centre and offer an amazing campaign for its followers, the club top brass did indeed a good job in getting great players in their quest of building a contender.
Being those in Ishmahil Akinade and Bastien Hery, as these two players were parts of Waterford success after their promotion in the big circuit and especially Bastien Hery being one of those all-around contributors.
Still the aim in this campaign will be to look forward another similar run these had and in the end not run out of gas as they end up surrendering to the push of the Shamrock Rovers overtaking third place from them.
With some players leaving these parts of Munster, the arrival of midfielders JJ Luney (Bohemians), Zack Elbouzaudi (West Brom), Shane Duggan (Limerick), defenders Kevin Lynch (Bray Wanderers, Damien Delaney (Cork City) and Maxime Kouogun (Warrenpoint Town).
The Blues are boosting their midfield and wings to boost their attack as well one of their utmost areas of need their defense in need of an overhaul in spite of last year feats, still this area was in need of correction.
In addition, of securing important players vital to last campaign successful run in Cory Galvin, Rory Feely, John Martin, Dean Walsh, Matthew Connor and Dean O’ Halloran, showing off this club desires of another prolific run.
So far, the duo of Club Director Pat Fenlon and manager Alan Reynolds is working wonderfully in building not only a competitor but also an all-around contender in these Blues and looking forward to continue in delivering many memorable afternoons.
In spite of all this talk of multiple accomplishments in one campaign, the need for this club repeating its feats will be one challenging one for manager Alan Reynolds, so far the new faces coming to the coast for sure will benefit this squad.
As the aims of this club are to achieve in its defensive game a more stingy and overzealous approach and increase its game with a series of clean sheets at home and especially on the road, as well add a new dynamic to its attack.
This club for sure will put on a fight and undoubtedly, these with a repeat of their amazing game and consistency in it along some improvements in its defense, this club for sure will finish again among the top four spots.
