What an afternoon of
an all-around dominance and top of the line football, in exhibition today in
the colossus of Dublin, Tallaght Stadium with the Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk
Lilywhites.
With this edition of the
EA Sports Cup final between these two and the Rovers coming with the advantage
of playing at home, the outlook did not look easy for the visiting Lilywhites.
As the Shamrock
Rovers playing lately with a lot of heart looking forward to seize the third position
in the overall table of league play, in their quest of delivering the last
European spot.
At the end, the match
belonged in its totality to the visiting Lilywhites.
After an inspired
David McMillan opening the scoreboard for the visitors, these started gaining a
lot of momentum ahead of what became an all-around achievement for them and their
Boss Stephen Kenny adding a new piece of silverware for the halls in Oriel
Park.
Still this was not an
easy affair for Kenny and company as the battling and resilient Hoops were not
at the end a walk in the park as these did put on an effort and at times looking
forward to open up the score or even it up and go to the heart stopping
penalties.
A total team commitment
and effort was the one displayed all ninety minutes long in this match as the
Dundalk bunch put on a display of pure and genuine football that deliver them another
feat in their current history full of successful achievements.
However, as the
campaign is about to wrap up and being played its last matches, Dundalk is about
to surrendered their three year back-to-back league shield and despite seeing their arch rivals Cork City lifting at the end the 2017 shield.
This win today's delivered a win less cup play for the current league of Ireland defending
champions, getting back into the winning column with this win after being
denied in two cup shields by the soon to be crowned league champions the Rebel
Army.
In the case of
Stephen Bradley Hoops once again coming short in their quest of delivering a
trophy in what seems a long drought, todays loss once again was a
setback for them but overall they can look for a payback.
As these two squads are
to meet again, in the semifinals of the FAI Cup and here Bradley and company can
set the score even with a win and at the same time eliminate the Lilywhites
from reaching another cup final will be an ideal task.
Returning to the
match by seeing how an inspired Dundalk initial eleven coming with all the
motivation and showing a fighting spirit throughout the whole match, these delivered for
them a one of a kind win in today’s match.
After McMillan score,
two of his teammates followed suit with Patrick McEleney and late substitute Thomas
Stewart delivering the final blow and go-ahead goal to seal the deal and at the
end, the visiting Lilywhites stared celebrating loudly after the final whistle.
The feat of Dundalk
FC will be a shoot of optimism and confidence ahead of their league compromises
and their upcoming semifinals match in the FAI Cup were they are to meet once
again the Shamrock Rovers.
In an match that promises
to be one of epic proportions as the Dundalk bunch are looking forward to
establish themselves as the league utmost squad and for the Shamrock Rovers
this match will be a sort of getting even and having another shoot of a major
trophy.
