How sweet it is to be
as far away from the infamous relegation spots, after the Sligo Rovers occupying
it for the course of the whole campaign, and now looking forward their
salvation.
After netting an
important and at the same time considered as a a tight win, playing as a visitor
in Finn Park against a resilient Finn Harps.
Now the squad managed
by Gerard Lyttle is looking forward to finish as far as possible from the
abyss.
With this weekend win
over a surprised Finn Harps, these having the upper hand of playing at home in
United Stadium, the Bit O’ Red did deliver when the going got tough and these
overcome at the end.
As this win not only
uplifted the Rovers up in the overall table and placing them in eight spot,
very well within a point of seventh placeholders Limerick Blues.
For the Sligo bunch
next week match once again playing as a visitor and against a squad looking desperately
to make a dash towards the upper positions, the Tribesmen of Galway United.
The outcome does not
look easy but the way the disciples of manager Lyttle are playing with ambition
and determination, they shall prevail but one thing for sure Galway is not a
picnic, still Sligo can play a one of a kind football.
So far, in this
shortened schedule due to the league of Ireland internal competitions in the
FAI and EA Sports Cups, this squad has taken advantage of all the opportunities
these had within their reach.
This game considered
as an all-around match between these two squads dubbed as the Northwest Derby, every
time these two titans stage it.
Today the Bit O’ Red
pulled one notable result over their cross-region foes as well denied them a
chance to add points in their favor, very well staging a winning streak despite
their loss to Longford Town in the FAI Cup via penalties.
In league play by far
are on a near perfect run without losing a match.
Still after today’s
win the outlook looks a bit tough but not difficult if this club continues playing
football the way they are lately, these may finish in a much notable position
in the end of the campaign and regroup for next year challenges.
The way Sligo won
this match was with his initial eleven performing all sorts of great plays and
never giving up on this match despite the crowd being not in their favor, but
that was not a deterrent to their quest to deliver.
With an early goal in
the first half the Bit O’ Red dominated much of this half before intermission,
with a goal in the 16 via Vincent Faherty, the visitors were looking to cruise
for an easy win.
As the second half started,
the local Harps were not giving up at all and looking forward to rescue a point
to continue its sole mission for their permanency in the top flight of the
League of Ireland.
When opportunity
knocked, it is when Harps midfielder Patrick McCourt scored in the 81 sending
the whole of Finn Park into frenzy and awakening the possibilities of a comeback
rally to leave their guests on the grounds.
As one thing the
Sligo Bunch known lately is for their perseverance and with an opportune score
in the 90 minute from Rhys McCabe, sealed the deal for Lyttle and company as
well move up the table.
