For now after City’s
loss to Sligo Rovers on Friday, this gave a boost in the Lilywhites aspirations and
leaving the door open to many possibilities.
Still the odds are
against them as first place Cork City can wrap this one up despite their back
to back loses recently against the Bohemians and Sligo Rovers squads, but for John
Caulfield side they can deliver anytime.
With a Sunday match
at Buncrana and visiting a tough Derry City squad, playing at home these chaps
can be a handful as well for Kenny Shiels and company looking forward to assure
a third place spot and a European position.
However, you are to play
the league three-time champions, European competitors and even though they have
seen three of their important players from those seasons gone, the Lilywhites
are one tough foe not to mess with.
If the league is loss, at the end, the goal of
manager Stephen Kenny is to finish it strongly and with a couple of cup
competitions, winning some of those shields to the halls in Oriel Park.
As Kenny ambitions to
provide to this club more glories, he is aware of rebuilding this squad with
new faces and shapes them as a competitive one for the next campaign.
Going back to the Sundays
match against Derry City and the riot the Dundalk initial eleven ran over the
feeble Candystripes defense and seeing an all-around mastery over their hosts
at Maginn Park.
With an inspired
first half play for the Lilywhites and a couple of goals from Robbie Benson in the
24 and 33 minutes, but one of the most amazing plays came a minute later when
Dave McMillan delivered the third goal in the 25.
In the 41, another strike
from John Mountney put the lid on this match as the visitors despite not
scoring in the second half but with their all-around dominance especially its backfield,
at the end this match was way over since its start.
As a glimpse of hope
looms in the Dundalk camp, the outcome of their campaign now depends on the
next set of performances the City squad shows off in their upcoming compromises
as these are within points to become league champions.
So far, for Kenny bunch
exercising a certain mastery over the Candystripes in a matter of seven days
the Derry lads have totaled eight goals scored from the Dundalk strikers and
this is something that manager Shiels needs to assess his backfield.
Despite the loss and
the Shamrock Rovers back in the winning column, the Candystripes are still in third
place and with a two-point advantage over the Dublin Boys in the overall table
and for Dundalk they have a ten point edge over Derry City.
At the end for
Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny hope is something he never losses and until the end
he and his Boys will be delivering positive results and close the campaign with
a high note.
