The Bit O’ Red hungry for its salvation

After doing the unthinkable of beating Cork City at home in Turners Cross Field, the Sligo Rovers did one of the utmost of feats after showing their determination to save their troubled campaign.

With a one of a kind defensive display and inspired football, the Bit O’ Red deliver a notable if not a raucous win over the Rebel Army.

This win gives the league leaders their second loss of the campaign and coming from a squad having their troubles in the relegation spots in the overall table.

As the Rovers finally winning on the road, and by one goal difference over the Leesiders, now they have the upper hand on Galway United, Finn Harps and Drogheda United seating lonely in the last spot of the table.

Their advantage over the Harps of one point and two over the Tribesmen assures the Sligo squad a certain relief placed in ninth place tied with Limerick and the differential between them and the Blues is just percentage.

Still for manager Gerard Lyttle their mission not fulfilled, despite of the latest series of positive results lately his squad has delivered and so far is fighting for its permanency in the big top, with one match at a time.

As for the hero of the match Rhys McCabe’s opportune play, that beat the City keeper for the lone goal in the 49 minute to seal the deal, although the City squad did not stopped in its efforts of putting the game even.

With City, strikers going after the posts defended by Rovers keeper Micheál Schlingermann who did a formidable job of defending and at the end, he persevered.

Still the main heroes in the match was the bit O’ Red backfield that put on a show of a defensive gem by stopping the likes of City strikers Jimmy Keohane, Kieran Sadlier, Gearroid Morrissey, Karl Sheppard, Garry Buckley and Shane Griffin.

By playing, the role of spoilers to the soon to be pronounced league champions and just eight points separates John Caulfield and his Cork City squad of becoming the league champions, still their lead over Dundalk of seventeen points.

We can say is a bit comfortable, for City their next match on Monday at United Park to face off the Finn Harps as these are battling with the demons of relegation in what promises to be a very tight game for both squads.

Despite the win manager Lyttle, needs to implement discipline in his eleven for the upcoming matches, as he cannot afford to have some of its players suspended due to the accumulation of cards.

At the end the win is what it counts for the Sligo Rovers looking forward to a notable and strong finish that will keep them away for the danger zone of relegation, as next week match will be against the Finn Harps.

This will be a match with all the elements of a Derby and all around final.
