Cork City netted a positive result at Gothenburg

John Caulfield Leesiders did the first step towards the next round of the Europa League after drawing against Swedish side Hacken. With a score of one goal apiece and a second leg to be played at Turners Cross, home of the Rebel Army- where they can seal the deal and advance into the next rounds.

After beating in the first round their Northern cousins, the Linfield Blues, for now Cork City, things is looking a bit good in their European adventure. Still they have to be cautious if they want to continue towards the next rounds.

By wrapping up a great week in domestic competition and now in international stages by making big achievements one series at a time and now looking forward in the UEFA tournament to go in the highly coveted stage group, that many of the Airtricity squads never seem to make it.

This time the Rebel Army is looking forward to be one of those representatives by the way they are playing with such confidence and momentum, the Leesiders can make it happen for the joy of their followers. Thankfully, for City their schedule in Airtricity put on hold over the weekend to get them ready for their international compromise against the Swedes.

As the BK Hacken Boys are one hardened and fighting squad that always makes the top rounds in this competition, despite being in seventh place in the  Allsvenskan or league of Sweden, the Gothenburg based eleven can do it. So far, nothing is leaning in favor for any of these squads in this series, despite the away goal edge from the Republic of Ireland squad.

Going back to an even and much contested match, it was for City striker Sean McGuire, who opened the hostilities for the visitors in the 63rd minute, via a penal with constant harassment by the Leesiders strikers over the opponent’s posts.

Still this was not a one sided affair as the locals did their best to get in the scoreboard and successfully did it in the 83rd minute, after that trying goal the Swedish side continue its push towards the Rebel Army posts.

Something that the Hacken strikers did not foresee was that sudden urge of the visiting keeper Mark Mc Nulty became a bit overzealous over his posts and not allowing the home squad to display their offensive might and experienced in this type of matches.

With a constant barrage of shoots from the Wasps star forward Brazilian Paulinho and John Owoeri, at the end the Leesiders hold on bravely and maintain the score even for the almost feat to be consummated next Thursday at Turners Cross.

At the end, anything can happen and for John Caulfield and his Cork City squad, being on the verge of netting their pass to the next rounds before being put on their next rivals and then decide their pass to the prime stage group.

City can be on its way to rewrite history and play with the best of Europe in this prestigious event, for now the City Boys focus will be wrapping the series up against BK Hacken at home and move on to the next stages.
