The Bit O’ Red catapults out of relegation with an important win

Jet lag and fatigue contributed for the Sligo Rovers cause, as these played a one or a kind match and deliver a notable if not important win over the visiting Shamrock Rovers.

After their important win in Iceland, the Hoops came to the Showgrounds with the hopes of a positive result as well jumped ahead of the Seagulls in third place of the overall table.

Not today was the Sligo Boys all around statement in the field.

With a single goal from John Russell on the fourth minute, that became enough for the locals to put a stop to Stephen Bradley’s bunch momentum and winning streak.

As the Bit O’ Red, not knowing the meaning of a victory, today this came handy for their cause and helping them jump away the relegation spots as this being one of its manager goals in their trouble campaign.

Still this match was not a pretty sight and despite the local’s dominance, the visiting side persistence seen in every minute trying to make the game they are comfortable with and try to break the clean sheet with a goal or two.

For the locals the win is not a pretty one, after its initial eleven got six yellow cards and its hero the author of the Sligo Rovers lonely goal John Russell getting a second yellow along a red to leave the home side a man short.

However, the spirit shown by the locals throughout the whole match were enough for them to deliver a win, be out of the relegation spots and break a curse of seven matches not seeing a win and netting three points of gold.

Very well a clean sheet for their keeper Micheál Schlingermann who earned his pay today in denying the visitors push in their quest of trying at least to even the score with clear arrivals from Gary Shaw, Ronan Finn, Roberto Lopes and Simon Madden.

At the end, Gerard Lyttle finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel and his Sligo Rovers came ahead in the battle of the Rovers as well situate his squad clear of the abyss in the League of Ireland general table.

Now their next match against at Derry City away will be another hard test for Lyttle and his men looking forward to break another spell on the road and looking forward to a win that will uplift this club confidence once again.
