For Shane Keegan and
his Galway United, today was the day to make the leap and play a one of a kind
match that would enable his bunch to deliver the unthinkable with win over a hardened
Dundalk FC.
With the Tribesmen permanency
in play and facing a Lilywhite squad looking forward to next campaign to put on
a championship run, the odds for the local Tribesmen playing at home at Eamon
Deacy Park were enormous for a win.
A win over the toppled
and former League of Ireland three-time champions, would be the tops!
As Keegan saw the
light in the early stages of the game, when his Tribesmen via Stephen Folan in
the 9 minute sending the whole of Deacy Park into a frenzy and opening the possibilities
of salvation, still this was a bit premature with plenty of time to play.
Unfortunately, for the
locals the celebration turned sour after the visitors two minutes later score
the equalizer in the 11 minute via Niclas Vemmelund taking advantage of a
second chance where he scored via a toe poke.
This brought a
meltdown suddenly to the Tribesmen defensive backfield after the followers of
this squad seeing in disbelief how the visitors took over the control of the match
with David McMillan, Michael Duffy, Jamie McGrath and Robbie Benson.
Still the Tribesmen
backfield, despite the arrivals and punishment by the visiting eleven strikers
aiming at the posts of Connor Winn, and despite his efforts, the pressure from
the Lilywhites paid off in the 42 with a goal from Jamie McGrath.
As the colossus of
Dyke Road seeing a good attendance of Galway supporter hopefuls to see a
miracle performed by their Boys, being shattered by the visitors push towards their
backfield and at the end of the first half going to halftime their squad
trailing by a lone goal.
The second half once
again saw the dominance of the pushy Lilywhites looking forward to lose the
campaign with a bang and for Stephen Kenny by observing several of his young
players towards next campaign and return his team to the top spots.
Not even a couple of
minutes passed when the Lilywhites once again put the ball behind the nets of Galway
and sentencing the local squad to its uncomfortable fate, with a shoot by
Patrick McEleney for a two goal lead in the 47.
Despite the reality
and the two-goal lead the former League of Ireland champions were putting in display,
all of a sudden the locals game starting getting a spark in its football and
playing with a lot of ambition.
After the score of the Lilywhites when a wakeup
call to the defense of the visitors came in the 53 minute when Galway’s counter
attack paid off when Rory Hale beats the likes of Dundalk’s keeper Gary Rogers
for the 3-2.
By awakening the
whole of Eamon Deacy Park congregation and returning their hopes after seeing a
marvelous fight put in by their Boys, with plenty of time left, the possibilities
of a comeback by staging a rally were enormous by the Tribesmen.
After that goal by Hale,
the game turned in favor of Galway and looking forward to another score, the
pressure given to Dundalk backfield became very visible as the locals began to dominate
the match continually to the dismay of the visitors.
As the seventieth,
minute both squad managers making all sorts of substitutions to get more rested
players to defend the lead and the locals to tie and extend their lead, came
the unthinkable in the 89 minute for Galway.
When the locals via
Ronan Murray score the equalizer sending the whole venue again into frenzy and
for the surprise of the Dundalk squad seeing how helpless they were of the rally
staged by the locals.
As the match official
awards four minutes of injury time the unthinkable of heartbreakers happens
when Dundalk Michael Duffy pushes the ball to seal the definite score of 4-3 in
their favor and sending Galway United to relegation.
After that score, the
amount of time was not sufficient for the locals to seek another goal, to stage
another rally, coming short on their quest to salvation on a wondrous goal
fest.
