League of Ireland recap of its penultimate week

After last week, champagne uncorked at Turners Cross by the flamboyant League of Ireland 2017 Champions Cork City and putting a stop to Dundalk FC reign after three consecutive campaigns.

So far, the European adventure for next champions League representing the SSE will be the Rebel Army of Cork City and UEFA Europa League for Dundalk FC and Shamrock Rovers if these latter ones hold their ground.

Still we have now a new race in the bottom, as Drogheda United and Finn Harps sealed their destiny to play in the first division, but with Galway United with a loss or a tie, joining the likes of these previously mentioned.

A win over Dundalk by the Tribesmen can make things difficult to Saint Patrick’s Athletic and Sligo Rovers putting in jeopardy their stay, if these two lose and putting a three-way tie with each squad holding 38 points each.

As this weekend, matches were the Limerick Super Blues playing at home at Markets Field hosting a resilient and determined Galway United to a 2-2 draw as the Tribesmen in the last minute the visitors score the equalizer.

With the locals with first half goals from Rodrigo Tosi 35 and Chiedozie Ogbene 42, were almost cruising to a much needed win despite their already assured permanency in the top flight.

The visitors with scores from Ronan Murray 47 and Eion McCormack 82 , seeing a revival from Shane Keegan group and leaving Limerick with a point and their hope alive of staging a miracle next week at Eamon Deacy Park.

At the colossus of Inchicore, Richmond Park the local Saints did a feat of helping themselves to a win and a possible return to the next campaign competition in the big circuit of Airtricity.

After a match up with the recently crowned league champions Cork City Liam Buckley and company were not impressed and put a display of that Pats football that has made this club a contender in past campaigns.

With a 4-2 win over the Leesiders, as these looked like they were cruising to an easy win over their hosts with early scores from Ryan Delaney 12 and Kieran Sadler 19, the reaction of the locals came in the 25 minute with a Jordi Balk score and 42 before halftime by Billy Dennehy.

No later, the second half saw the Saints revival and almost assuring their stability in the top flight for another campaign, as scores from Ian Bermingham 64 and Kurtis Byrne 78 to seal the deal and three golden points with the win.

The Bohemians went to Oriel Park and netted a very important if not valuable win over the local Lilywhites Dundalk FC to a lone score Ishmahil Akinade in the 44  to deliver three points of gold for the Gypsies and plan for next campaign.

For now, the Bohs are solidly set to see another day in the big circuit and with 44 points and set in with a sixth, place finish after a slow start and being in the relegation spots the Dubliners did stage an awakening.

Carlisle Grounds saw how their Bray Wanderers deliver a fatal blow and upset to the visiting Shamrock Rovers with a lone goal from Aaron Greene 74 for the win.

In addition, despite the Seagulls staying put in the top flight, their future and economic troubles are casting a shadow over their future in league play and many see an exodus of important players to other clubs for this club to take care of its settlements.

The Showgrounds were the place to see their beloved Bit O’ Red delivers an important win in their quest of saving themselves from the infamous relegation and a point next week will do, but with a certain level of pressures for manager Gerard Lyttle.

With scores from Rhys McCabe 9, Vincent Faherty 40 and Craig Roddan 90 to seal the deal leave the visiting Candystripes of Derry City in the field to a score of 3-0.

A win will come in handy and assure another day in the Airtricity league to see another day and buried this infamous campaign away, to plan for a successful 2018.

Lastly in the relegation derby between the Finn Harps and Drogheda United at Finn to the locals followers discontent and knowing the faith of their squad after this loss to a 3-2 score.

With the locals scoring with a double Caolan McAleer 1 and 90 with the Droghs Christopher Mulhall 61, Thomas Byrne 73 and Stephen Meaney 82 these deliver a win not savored by the Droghs for quite a while.

As 1 more week of league action and the 95th edition of Irish Daily Mail FAI Irish Cup to celebrate between archrivals Dundalk FC and the defending winners of last edition Cork City looking forward to another trophy to their shelves.
